Contest Closed. Winner Selected

Winner:                         rexgo

Winning Submission:  " Wow – didn't really know this was an issue. I would like to see the contest holder more stongly encouraged to pick the winner, and eliminate additional efforts. This is the fairest, and without controversy. = Feedback on the Detailed Brief suggestions: 1. Winner Board: = Best of the 4 listed – If the board cannot agree – keep adding judges (from the crowd) until a majority is rec'd 2. Equally divide the winnings: = Not a good option little reward for efforts 3. Randomly pick a winner: = Not good – discounts effort and creaitivity - turns it into a game of chance 4. Assign winner...past 30 days performance = Also not good – discounts the entries totally, and includes all types of contests. My Suggestion (if winner encouragement won't work) I could live with opening it up to the crowd to choose – and only the crowd that participated (in that contest) could vote and the first entry to a majority would win. If there were 27 contestants – decision is based on 27 votes only Any ties would go to a “Tie Board” similar to the Winner board described in brief suggestion # 1 When a see a winner chosen I usually agree that it was a good / winning entry. • Detailed Brief
  • Recently we have received feedback from several contestants that the current policy of awarding winner (in case the contest holder doesn't pick the winner) is not fair. If a contest holder leaves the contest unawarded, we currently pick a winner based upon the contest holder's ratings. However this leaves the unrated contestants in a disadvantage position. We believe this is a valid concern and we would like your feedback on making the winner selection process completely transparent and objective. Frankly, we would like to eliminate any subjectivity from our side in this process so that the contestants do not feel that the winners were unfairly selected. Here are four options we have considered in case of unawarded contests:

    1. Winner Board: We assign a winner selection board to every contest. This would consist of randomly selected 3-5 users of our community who would have full authority in selecting a winner for unawarded contests. The only exception is that the users can not choose their own entries as the winner. We still need to consider the scenario - what happens if the board doesn't agree on a specific winner - how would we select a winner in that case?

    2. Equally divide the winnings: We divide the winnings equally among all contestants who had participated in the contest. Note - this would usually result in a significant fragmentation of the award fees, especially when there are 50+ contestants participating in a single contest.

    3. Randomly pick a winner: This eliminates all subjectivity but is not a fair option for those contestants who really worked hard.

    4. Assign winner based upon their past 30 days performance. For example, the winner selection would be based upon who received the most 4+ star ratings across all contests in the last 30 days. This ensures that good quality contestants get rewarded for their effort. We can display the rating score board openly, so that there is no ambiguity around who would be selected as a winner.

There might be many other options and we need your feedback on what option you think is the most fair. In addition, please feel free to share any constructive feedback on how to make this an even better platform. We want to hear from you and are serious about making changes in our policy and platform to ensure that your efforts are rewarded fairly by contest holders.

While it was a difficult decision to pick a winner, we selected rexgo as the winner for suggested an interesting approach which should minimize any potential misuse of the voting system. We will updating our winner selection policy shortly but we are confident that these suggestions will help us make the process much more objective and transparent.

Thank you again for all the great ideas. It is tough to choose a winner when there are so many good ideas. We are taking a bit more time to go through every single suggestion in details and we would be announcing a winner as well as our policy shortly.

I was not aware that all contests are now private as I've been inactive for a long time. The no. 1 option should be implemented. I've always wondered how many are the REAL HUMANS here. Everyone seems to be so busy and concentrated over milking from this site.

Thank you everyone for your ongoing feedback. Your ideas are very helpful. Please take into account one additional point:

As you are probably aware, all domain name contests are now private. This was a result of prior feedback from our contestants that their IP should be protected and that only contest holder should be able to see their entries to minimize any third party users registering these names.
If we open up the unawarded contests for voting, this means that we would need to make the entries public to the group of users who are allowed to vote. Please keep this in mind, when considering the voting approach.

Keep your ideas coming. We are committed to revising our policies to improve our platform.

Thanks Boonana. Glad you agree. Squadhelp just commented to my entry and made a valid point- this small amount might not make a difference. So I thought of something else.

After contests end, Squadhelp could tell contest holders that if they don't have a favorite entry -they can choose the best user instead. That way they won't have to waste time reviewing hundreds or thousands of suggestions. They could simply go over the list of -50 names and name a user who they feel was best. They could even choose a winner randomly if they want to. The important thing here is that the contest holders will make the choice so contests will end the way they should (instead of votes by users who can be impartial etc.). Then once Squadhelp will have the name of the winner, they could choose one of their entries.

    Makes sense?

Wow! Lots of good suggestions so far. Thanks for this great debate - please feel free to express your opinion because we truly want to design our policies that reward the handwork of our contestants in the best way possible. Few things to keep in mind:

    1. We would like to policy to be simple to enforce, and very clear to understand for everyone. While we can come up with very complex winner selection policies that work best in different situations, it might result in more confusion.

    2. We already have an incentive system where the contest holders receive a promotional credit if they choose a winner within the first 3 days of contest closure. Asking for additional fees upfront (as escrow) might actually result in less number of contests because the contest holders might see the initial fees as too high. We are still open to this idea but need to consider the implications of increasing our upfront fees.

    Great ideas. Keep them coming!

I actually don't have any problems with squadhelp's current winner selection policy. I'm quite surprised myself that a lot of people are having problems with it. You also have a point and I agree with it also. It's also a great idea to pay a deposit as an incentive to pick a winner. Maybe the voting thing can be done as a last resort?

Hey Boonana. Letting people who want to win a prize vote for a winner is like letting the cat guard the milk. People can base their vote on stuff that's not related to the quality of the suggestions. For example: who won past contests, users they befriended etc. People can also start arranging to vote for each other. I think the whole voting concept is just a bad idea and really complicates everything. There are many contests where a winner isn't chosen and voting again and again will be really annoying. Personally I think the current system is very fair. But like Rexgo wrote in his entry (I also wrote it in my entry)- the most logical thing is to cause the contest holders to choose a winner. What I suggested (and I hope Squadhelp will consider it) is to make contest holders pay a deposit they will get back if they choose a winner. That way they'll have an incentive to do the right thing.

Hi guys, I didn't even bother to submit an entry for this because I know that some of you might have already thought about it. So I would just like to add to some of your suggestions. In my opinion, I think the best and the most fair way to pick a winner is to allow the crowd to choose. A lot of you have already suggested this but I think rexgo's idea is great- Allow the crowd to vote but ONLY those who have entered the said contest can vote. Why? because some people may create multiple/dummy accounts just to vote for themselves. Some of you may have better ideas... keep 'em coming! Good luck, everyone!
