  • Detailed Brief
  • As a "marketing technology" agency one of our biggest challenges is getting prospective clients to understand we're not a marketing agency (ie: focused on creating marketing campaigns to get more visitors to a website or more views of a marketing video or followers on Facebook). Although we do work closely with marketing agencies, our specialty is in working with those agencies and the organizations they represent to help implement the business processes and technologies that will automate, measure, and iterate their marketing efforts so that they can more intelligently and effectively connect with their audience, get a better return on their marketing investment, and scale their marketing efforts.

Our current tagline, which you can see on the home page of our website is: "Millions of views? Excellent. How many new clients?"

The problem I see with the existing tagline is that it (a) isn't clear enough. It makes the reader infer what we're talking about, and requires the reader to read the text below to fully understand; (b) it uses "views" as a general measurement for the marketing campaign, but that only applies to video marketing, and ignores other types of marketing measures like "impressions", "visits", "leads", etc; (c) it assumes that "new clients" is the success metric that each business is looking for. And although that may be the case for many of our clients, it's not for others (such as non-profits and government organizations, who don't have clients).

I do think it is safe to say most organizations are looking for a solution to help measure and improve return on investment (ROI) for their marketing spend.

For your reference, the current tagline is followed by this sentence: "We use technology to make businesses' marketing efforts more successful. When that campaign goes viral, get more than just hits." To learn more about our firm, and the type of language we use in our own marketing, read this content strategy brief document:

Nobody submitted a winning headline, but I guaranteed the award, so I'll just pick a winner randomly.

I have come up with my own headline, which unfortunately I like better than any submission thus far. See if you can improve on this headline:
"Measure success in more meaningful ways. Repeat."

For your reference, here is the latest (revised) sub-headline that will appear below the headline:
"We use technology to help you connect more effectively with your audience, act on the most insightful data, and automate it all."

    I have updated our sub-headline:

"Success is not measured in views or hits. We use technology and analytics to help your organization connect more effectively with your audience."

This is the text that will appear BELOW the headline you create.

Below I recommended against using "Marketing" in the headline, because it confuses the fact that we're not marketers...and I think it has improved the submissions. Now I'm going to make a similar suggestion: don't use "Technology" in the headline, or any other word that describes our services. The headline shouldn't describe our services, or what we *do* (the whole website does that); the headline should describe the *value* of what we do in a clear and concise way that appeals to the logic and emotion of a business consumer.

If I was marketing to other professionals in my industry I might use a headline like "Greater consumer engagement leads to greater ROI", but that's too bland and full of industry jargon for our target audience. We need something that captures the interest of the non-marketing business person while ALSO conveying that we're the professional partners that can help.

Please post comments if you have any questions, and I'll answer.

This project is be more accurately titled "Website homepage headline," rather than "Tagline" so I have retitled the project to reflect this.

Don't use "R3R" in your submission, or start your submission with "R3R," because this phrase will not appear beside the logo. Instead it will appear on the front of the homepage of our website, in big bold letters.

Although the contest specifies the length requirement for the tagline to be 10 words or less, the actual tagline should be no more than 7 words, to fit where our current homepage headline fits (see brief for details).

Don't try to make R3R an acronym, such as "Real Real Results" or anything like that. R3R doesn't stand for anything.

Stay away from unrealistic promises, such as "Technology will make your campaigns soar!"

I'd love to see more creative submissions without the word "Marketing" in the tagline, because I think use of that word serves to confuse the point that we're not marketers. If you want to use the word "Marketing" that's ok.

With regard to preferred keywords to be used, I won't name any specific keywords, because I'd like to leave it up to your creativity. But but if you refer to the content strategy document I linked to in the brief you will see a list of keywords as well as more detail about message we're trying to convey.
