  • Detailed Brief
  • Dear Creatives,

The company name is required for a new luxury fashion brand for men. The company will tailor suits and shirts on demand in the same way a regular tailor does however the business will be completely online based.
Products sold: suits, shirts and other formal fashion clothing items and accessories.
    Price of products: high
    Quality of products: very high
    Origin of products: United Kingdom
Market for products: US, Japan. Europe, Canada, Australia
    Route to the market: online

    The brand name:
    1. The brand name should NOT have any association with products sold, market or fashion, e.g. suits4u, 4men, etc. It must be completely distant.
    2. NO hyphens or numbers. Only single word. No two words put together (smartsuist, londonfasion)
    3. Very EASY to pronounce. Very easy to remember.
    4. Most importantly the name should have clear traditional English (not just language but coming from England) heritage. It should not be associated with any other countries such as Italy or France. Heritage should be associated with the name.
    5. Maximum of 8 letters, fewer the better. Must be available on .com, .eu and co.uk however for very good name just .com would be acceptable.
    6. Example of similar brands (in terms of a product rather than the name): http://www.crombie.co.uk/; http://www.drakes-london.com/; http://www.h-huntsman.com/;
    7. Examples of very good names: Hackett, huntsmen, Crombie, blackstone, ascot, Hackney.
    8. Examples of bad names: Lanciot (European association), smartfashion (cheap and not associated with England); isquire (not traditional English origin, association with the established brand Esquire and difficult to pronounce, masablan, calibran (both European association rather than English).
    9. Can (but does not have to) be made up (without any meaning) however no obvious association with established brands.
    10. It is very important that it sounds as a brand for men. No feminine association. The man should be proud to say what brand of suit he is wearing without having difficulties with pronunciations.

    How winner will be chosen:
    1. I will choose number of names I like and will create a questionnaire where large sample of people (mostly men) will rate the name between 1 and 10. They will be aware what the name is for.
    2. I will also ask them to indicate those names that have negative association and that are not easily pronounced.
    3. I will also ask a sample to note those names that they remembered (no access to list of names at that point).
    4. Eventually I will take best 5 and talk to potential customers on streets to find out their opinion.
I will provide you feedback on daily basis.

    Thank you.

Thank you guys for all your suggestions. I very much appreciate it. I received some very good names and one of them will be without doubt a new brand.
What happens next: I will go through more than 800 names that you submitted and look if I awarded a low score for any good name and put it into the group of 5 stars. Names awarded 5 stars will go into next stage where I ask at least 200 people about their opinion about the names. Based on the result of questionnaire and my personal opinion a winner will be chosen.

    Thanks again,
    Stanley

-on for names posted before my comment is fine. I had to put this condition in because I was getting so many words finishing -on. All previously posted -on names with a 5 star rating will continue to be short-listed.

    Thanks

    Feedback day 5:

1 star: Quite few mainly as a result of contributors that put their suggestions forward for the first time to this contest and did not have a chance to read my comments at the bottom of the page. As a result most 1 star names are due to .com domain not being available. Some also do not sound English (some sound Italian or German) and finish on vowels.

2 stars-4 stars: majority but very few 4 stars.

5 stars: Another 4 additions taking the overall number of shortlisted names for a potential victory to 10.

There is still about 18 hours to go and I still do not have a name that would stand out from the other 9 shortlisted.

If you think you have a name that is great I will be pleased to see it but keep in mind following conditions:

    1. No vowels (a,e,i,o,u, not even letter y)

    2. The name should NOT finish on the following syllable -on

    3. It must be available on .com domain.

    4. It must sound English

    5. Must be short and not longer than 8 letters. The shorter the better.

    6. Should not include %u2013men or %u2013man.

    Thank you,
    Stanley

    Feedback day 4:

Today there have been few good suggestion but overall few 4 stars and 2 more 5 stars. At the moment overall there are 6 names with 5 stars that will be shortlisted to win.

Those names that score low are usually those that do not make sense at all. It is just a mixture of letters from a name generator that is difficult to pronounce. Many of them finish on vowel (a,e,i,o,u, y ). I would recommend not creating names with a vowel at the end as it is not going to sound masculine and possibly not English (%u2018y%u2019 may be exception in some cases).

Those names which score well (4 and 5 stars) are usually names that are short and some letter is added or subtracted from the well-known English name that is not available as a domain. These names do not remind anything in particular (especially not objects) but are just equivalent of nice English word. If you do that the only thing that you need to get right is that the name should sound masculine.

I am still waiting for my 6 star name.

    Thank you,
    Stanley

    Feedback day 3:
1 star: only few due to words sounding everything but English and small number of .com domain not being available
2 stars: 75% due to the name being difficult to pronounce. Try to pronounce it and if it does not sound nice or very simple/ fast said it is not going to be the name I am looking for.
    3 stars: 15%
    4 stars: 8%
    5 stars: 2 names

Overall most suggestions are available on .com domain however the quality of suggestions was worse than in previous couple of days. At the moment only 4 words are shortlisted to win. None of them is overly brilliant so it is very much open. I am still looking for THE name. I will welcome your suggestions.

    Thanks

    Feedback Day 2:

Today I receive number of good suggestions. Unfortunately there have been a huge number of names for which .com domain is not available (.com is a must, .co.uk and .eu are bonuses). I contacted Squadhelp why you are not able to check domains availability and the reason is that it is a brand name contest not a domain contest. However, I do not understand Squadhelp reasoning as who would not care about an availability of the domain for particular brand?

Anyway, the summary of day 2:
1 star: 90% of entries mostly as a result of .com domain not being available and few clearly have Italian sound (finishing on %u2018-i%u2019 or %u2018-o%u2019; see my previous message).
2 stars: few but mostly because the name is too long or it is difficult to pronounce.
    3 stars: few
    4 stars: small amount
5 stars: 2 names. Only those names with 5 stars have a chance to be shortlisted for a win. So far only 2 out of more than 300 but hopefully few more will be added.

The biggest weakness of most entries is that they are too long and not easy to pronounce (not difficult but not easy).

Thank you for all your inputs.

    Feedback after day 1:

Thank you for all entries submitted. However, from more than 200 entries 99% have just 1 star as .com domain is not available. Few have 3 stars and 1 name 4 stars. There is no 5 star name at the moment.

Please make sure than .com is available. The name should not finish with '..o' or '..i' as this names looks more like of the Italian origin. There have been few names that include mix of two words which is not desirable.

Possibly the biggest weakness of those that sound English is that they are difficult to pronounce.

    How you should understand rating:

One star: Name does not comply with instructions

Two stars: Comply with instructions but I don't like it.

Three stars: It is sort of OK but will never win.

Four stars: Quite good. There is a potential. Push bit more and you have a chance the name to be considered.

Five stars: Is short-listed to win.
