  • Detailed Brief
  • We need an available .com domain name for a coffee community & ecommerce website we are launching. The site will sell coffee from premium, independent roasters to consumers in North America.

    TOur tagline is "Wake up to something better". The name should *not* have the word "coffee" or "bean" in it - we want to keep it flexible (in case we sell tea later). We want names that are straightforward and don't sound cheap (so no "Coffee4u.com"). Imagine names that you could see equally at home at a traditional brick & mortar store (e.g., "Starbucks").

    Bonus points for names that suggest habit or ritual (e.g., "OurDailyCup.com" - which, sadly, is taken).

    So you really want something out of the box?

    I'm seeing some good submissions, but a lot of missteps. Here are two heuristics that should help you all move closer to what we're looking for:

    Before you submit a name, ask yourself:

    1) Would this name work for coffee shop in my neighborhood?

    2) Would this name work on a pornography site?

    If the answer to question 1 is "yes", then great - let's hear it! If the answer to question 1 is "no", then we're not interested. If the answer to question 2 is "yes", we're not interested.

    I know 2 may seem obvious, but a surprisingly high number of submissions would be a "yes".

    Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

    One more: a lot of submissions so far just take words from the brief "e.g., "premium", "ritual", "daily", "coffee", etc.) and throw them together. That won't work - if the name is too literal, it makes it sound like "cheapshoelaces.com" or "yogapantsforyou.net". Please try to be a little more subtle. Thanks!

    Thanks to everyone who's submitted names so far! I'm seeing a lot of common missteps, so I wanted to post two pieces of general feedback:

    1) Per the brief, please don't include the word "coffee" in the name (or things that sound exactly like "coffee" like "quoffee");

    2) The name doesn't need to have the words "daily" or "cup"in it. I just happened to like the sound and flow of "ourdailycup", which is why I put it in the brief. You can branch out!

    Thanks!
