7 Tips in creating a top marketing slogan

When thinking about a slogan for your business, you want it to be something which would catch your target market’s attention and would stick on the minds of potential customers. A slogan should be in line with your product, service and the brand of your company.

An effective marketing slogan is something which is easily remembered would be easily related or referred to your product or business. A top marketing slogan can easily be remembered and even used in simple conversations, with your product or service in people’s minds.

Here are 7 tips to come up with top marketing slogans:


1) Start from the very beginning. Remember when you were just coming up with your business name, your brand, your business logo and overall business plan? Go back and review your notes and ideas. Make sure that you pull out the data and information and incorporate it in planning and creating your business slogan. Take note of the following information:

  • The kind of business you are running
  • The product and services offered
  • What makes you or your business stand out
  • The identity you are creating for your business


2) Be consistent. Your marketing slogan should be consistent with your brand, your product and service, and the identity you are crating for your business. It should also coincide with your logo and the brand equity you want your business to build. For example, Nike’s “Just do it” slogan is consistent with the ads they are showing on the Web and on television – about daring to just do things, without hesitation… sending out the message, “Just do it.”


3) Keep it simple. Just like in designing your logo and in coming up with your business name, keep it simple – if possible, short. Business names and logos which are simple are easily recognizable and can be effortlessly remembered. Thus, in creating a top marketing slogan, something that is simple can easily be recalled and can be quickly associated with your business. 4) Send out a message of why your potential customers should prefer your business. Your logo can incorporate the following points:

  • The kind of business you do
  • What your product can do OR what value-added services you offer
  • Why should potential customers and clients do business with you and prefer to do business with you

Take for example the slogan of M&Ms again. “Melts in your mouth, not in your hands” is something that makes it unique from most of the chocolates in the business industry. It invites potential buyers to choose M&Ms because it simply is not like most of the other products in the same industry.


5) Be honest and be real. Choose a slogan which actually describes your product or service. Do not use words which are too good to be true. Make sure that what your slogan says, your company can deliver. Avoid words such as, “perfect”, “100%”, “the best”, or “number 1”. These words are hard to substantiate. Considering that they are true, being “the best” or being “number 1” is absolutely hard to back up with data and unbiased information.


6) Keep your target market in mind. When coming up with a business slogan, keep your target market in mind. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Would it be appealing to them?
  • Will it answer their possible questions?
  • Would it address their need and/or want?
  • Is it something believable and real?
  • Is it acceptable to your market’s culture and background?


7) Try it off with friends and get inputs. Try your slogan with your trusted colleagues in the business or your circle of friends, especially those which are included in your target market. If it appeals to them and it sounds good to them, then there is a high probability that your slogan can appeal to your potential customers. Also, get their inputs and consider their comments.
